Joyful experiences have a particularly beneficial impact on our hearts, minds, and bodies. They lower stress hormones, strengthen the immune system, and help us settle back if we are frustrated or worried. With this practice, we can actively invite these qualities into our lives.
In this meditation, we practice one-pointed attention. Focusing on one point and at the same time allowing full awareness of your breath, sensations, sounds, thoughts, etc... allows us to still the movements of the mind. Like a glass of muddy water, the mud can slowly settle and the mind becomes clear.
By allowing ourselves to feel what we feel we practice non-resisting life as it is. As we practice non-resistance against our emotions - neither internally nor acting out externally we learn to accept ourselves as we are. As we “start where we are”, we create a space. In this space, we can start to relax our hearts rather than closing and armoring and cutting ourselves off from our environment and people around us.
Nadi Shodana Pranayama is an excellent practice to synchronise the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. It helps to lower heart rate and increase heart rate variability. It can be done both at the beginning of the day to start with a calm and equilibrated mind, as well as at the end of the day to reduce excess stress and tension in the body and the mind.
This meditation on equanimity and peace is inspired by my beloved teacher Jack Kornfield. It's a practice to steady our hearts and open our minds to the ever-changing nature of all things, to uncertainty and instability. As Jack so often says: "Our hearts know how to do this. Generations before us have learned to deal with challenges and uncertainty. We can do it too!".
